Running AIFILES from Icon in Appraise-It 3.3

If you are running Appraise-It and have a system crash, shut down windows improperly, or Appraise-It crashes, temporary files or recovered files are frequently left behind in Appraise-It’s temporary folder (TRAPRIV).  Such crashes can also corrupt auxiliary files in Appraise-It’s TRA directory.  These files can cause various errors, slow down your system, and impede Appraise-It’s performance. Running AIFILES will clean out these problem files. If your digital signature disappears, you can also close Appraise-It and run AIFILES to see if it will restore your signature.  It also helps speed up Appraise-It if you close it every hour.

To Run AIFILES

1.      Save your work.

2.      Close Appraise-It.

3.      Run AIFILES by double clicking on the icon you will create below. (WARNING!  Be certain Appraise-It is closed on the computer before running AIFILES.  It is not necessary to have Appraise-It closed on each workstation, just on the workstation where you are running AIFILES.)

To Create AIFILES ICON

1. Open Windows Explorer (Start-Programs-Windows Explorer)

a)       On the upper Tool bar, click on VIEW

i)        Click on VIEW and select DETAILS.  (Also, make sure there is a check next to STATUS BAR under View.)

ii)       Click on VIEW and select OPTIONS (or Folder Options) at the bottom.

(1)   Click on the VIEW tab.

(2)   Uncheck Hide File Extensions or MS DOS file extensions.

(3)   Select SHOW ALL FILES.

(4)   Click OK

iii)     On the left side of the screen under Folders, double click the [C:] drive (It is below 3 ½ floppy A.)

(1)   On the left side of the screen, double click the TRA directory

(2)   On the left side of the screen, double click the TECH directory

(3)   On the right side of the screen, right click the AIFILES.BAT file

(4)   Left click Send to  – Desktop as Shortcut

(5)   Close Windows Explorer

2. With Appraise-It closed, double click the AIFILES icon on your desktop. You should see a black flash. This should help Appraise-It run smoother and possibly resolve corrupt file error messages and recovered file messages that you may have been receiving when trying to open Appraise-It.

3. Also, would also be a good practice to hit Ctrl+S (the short cut for File – Save) every few minutes as you work.  One reason for doing so is because AIFILES will delete recovered files anyway so you may wish to turn off AutoSave in Appraise-It.  Another reason for doing so, is that File – Save is a genuine save.  AutoSave and the recovered files it produces frequently causes problems in any Windows program, and it is not as reliable as a genuine save. This is the reason AIFILES was designed to delete recovered files.  To turn off AutoSave:

i)                    In Appraise-It

ii)                   Click Options – Auto-Save

(1)   Set it to 0.

(2)   Click OK
