SpeedUpXP
Due to a memory buffer problem within the
Microsoft’s OS, workstation accessing directories on Win NT, 2000, XP servers
that have thousands of files in those directories may be very sluggish. Thus
our users may encounter substantial delays when trying to use File-Open in
Appraise-It if they have thousands of reports.
The attached file is based on information available from Microsoft and TweakXP. The information at Microsoft required the user to manually edit the registry, whereas the information at TweakXP provided information that automated the process but did not work. We have corrected the automation from TweakXP so that it will install. Further, we have tested it on Win 2000 and XP servers and found it effective. Although we did not test it on an NT server, Microsoft provides this same type solution for NT servers so we anticipate that it will be effective in this case also.
Although we encountered no problem once we
tweaked the TweakXP procedure, it is always prudent
to backup your registry before making any modifications to it. We will not be
held responsible for alterations and suggestions provided by third party
providers such as Microsoft and TweakXP so the
attached file is offered as is without guarantees or warrantees. Nevertheless,
our own tests attest to it safety and effectiveness. You may download the
attached file to your Win 2000 or XP server, run it, and then reboot the
server. For specifics, see below. (Note, this tweak
will not speed up the access of a XP workstation to a Win 98 server. In such an
office environment, Win 2000 or XP would ideally be the server, not Win 98.)
